What is an Internship?
An internship or apprenticeship is a professional learning opportunity that provides interns with worthwhile, hands-on work in their field of study or career interest. An internship allows a student to gain new skills and a lot of information and knowledge about their future jobs and corporate environment while also exploring and developing their profession. It allows the businesses to bring in new ideas and enthusiasm, cultivate talent, and perhaps establish a pipeline for future full-time workers.
A quality internship is the one that offers an intern with a part-time or full-time work schedule with clerical or administrative responsibilities along with the work experience that provides a detailed job/project description. It also Introduces the interns to the organisation, its culture, and with the know-how of how work is actually done in the corporate environment. It also assists the learner in their development and growth and achieving learning objectives in order to excel in the corporate ladder in future.
cooperative education (co-op), research experience and internship are often synonymous for a fresher but in real terms these are very different terms and here is the difference:-
Internships - Internships are supervised, organised learning experiences in a professional context that provide students with meaningful job experience in their subject of study. A minimum of 120 hours must be spent on an internship (typically, at least 10 hours per week during the fall and spring and either part-time or full-time during the summer).
Co-ops- Co-ops are paid employment that require students to alternate semesters between full-time work and full-time academic study for at least two semesters throughout the academic year. After graduation, students are frequently, but not always, granted full-time work with the organization. Although co-ops are not prevalent at UMBC, some students are interested in them as a form of practical learning.
Research - Both on-campus and off-campus research opportunities are offered to students these days. These opportunities provide a unique opportunity to learn more about a student's academic interests and evaluate how graduate school could fit into their future plans. Organizations such as the National Science Foundation may be able to provide funding for these experiences (NSF).
What do interns expect from the internship: 1) To get real-world experience and contribute to the company's success which would eventually give them a feeling of early advancement in their career . 2) Having a mentor who can offer advice, feedback, receptivity, and professionalism. 3) To obtain knowledge and expertise in a specific subject. 4) To make professional connections. 5) To get access to senior management. They will be given an orientation to the firm where they will be interning. This gives the student information about the firm's objective and goals, as well as its rules, regulations, work culture and processes. It also introduces the intern to coworkers who they may approach with questions in the future.
How can an organisation benefit from hiring interns: 1) Regular workers' workloads are made easier. 2) Allow staff to concentrate on higher-level activities. 3) Meet your short-term staffing requirements 4) Complete "Priority C" projects and responsibilities. 5) Employ a cost-effective hiring approach. 6) Get access to highly motivated students who can help you cover staffing gaps. 7) Complete projects that have a deadline. 8) Create a pool of prospective employees. 9) Prepare the workforce of the future 10) Infuse your organisation with new energy and ideas.
“All the best!!”
